"I write from life experiences with all the authenticity of emotion that can bring, but shy away from revealing too much, leaving space so people can mirror their own stories into my words. Darkside is very personal to me. I wrote it in a gloomy moment and felt much better for it - euphoria comes from beaming light into dark places to evict demons. The lyrics were inspired by people close to me who feel divided inside. Mental health is the thru-the-looking-glass loss of identity and it scares the s--t out of all of us.
Psychosis can turn anyone inside out. While the pharmaceutical industry mass prescribes anti-depressants, are we losing sight of the causes and why there is an overwhelming increase in patients? Drug abuse, mental illness and homelessness permeate our cities and remote small towns, reminding us everyday of the fragility of the human psyche, raising questions we can’t answer but need to discuss. Darkside is an attempt at reminding people that they’re not alone, a step towards addressing a problem that is often left unspoken (and unsung) --- Hugo Race
