1. Writers are readers.
This one is widely understood but I first learned it in Stephen King’s, “On Writing.” It’s important to immerse yourself in more elegant language than you witness in day to day life.

2. I took many writing courses in college and the very best piece of advice I received was, “you have to get your ass in the writing chair.”
Thinking about your story is not writing. Getting ready to write is not writing. Carving out time to write is not writing. Only writing is writing. And for a story to be written, writing needs to be done.
