What if there is not enough bone to support the dental implants?
When you lose a tooth, and it is not replaced in time, the bone in that area starts to lose its mass (shrinks). Over a while, it reaches a point where the remaining bone is not enough to hold the dental implants. A healthy (good bone mass) jaw bone is a prerequisite to getting the dental implant procedure done.
But with the developments today, it is possible to get the dental implant done even when there is a significant bone loss by going through additional procedures like bone grafting, sinus lift or ridge expansion.
Bone grafting is a process in which a piece of bone from other body parts like the hip or shin bone is taken and added to the (lower) jaw bone that has lost its mass. It is performed in surgery and with the help of general anaesthesia. Today, even artificial bone materials are available to do the grafting, which makes the procedure available to someone who doesn't want the bone from other parts of the body taken.
