Welcome to the Beyond the Scope Podcast presented by ND MD. This podcast continues the mission of sharing the incredible stories and experiences of students, physicians, and healthcare professionals...but this time it's all about the things all those years of medical training doesn't prepare you for. Things that are beyond the scope of our practice. Whether it's navigating starting a family as a medical student or physician, or learning how to invest as a student, the goal is to bring on incredible guests who can guide you through those puzzling questions. Today we have an incredible pioneer to a new rural family medicine residency program, Dr. Zeel Shah. Over the past year as an intern resident, Dr. Shah has helped navigate her passion for serving communities in rural areas and explains how to know if this intimate specialty is right for you. Many medical schools are creating programs just like this to expand physician outreach to underserved areas of the country.

Family Medicine is a very interesting career. In my Midwest residency, we train to be primary surgeon on c-sections, do large volumes of complicated pregnancy management, large numbers of vaginal deliveries, scopes and procedures, and complicated ICU care. To address some comments, The flexibility and variety in that skill set is something NPs cannot replace or replicate. It also is the only speciality that can meet the needs of small rural communities without the resources to have a full speciality team. That’s why many of our FM grads work internationally and in rural USA

Wowwww LOVED this whole entire interview with her she is an absolute gem✨ Her last piece of advice was definitely what I needed to hear right now "you're smarter than you think"

I really enjoyed hearing the concluding remarks about being humble, reflecting on hard times and showing compassion through that mindset. That perspective is applicable everyday.

I hope that Dr Zeel's message to physicians about not forgetting what it was like when they were students and the insecurity/imposter syndrome that comes with it is heard by the doctors who view this video. I've come across doctors who seem to have forgotten what it was like to be a student and it's something that I, as a medical graduate, don't want to forget simply because I "made it" and am "on the other side". Just because "that's how things were done" before doesn't mean that's how they should be done in the future. Disrupt the system.

I thought about Family Medicine. But the issue I am seeing is that a-lot of Nurse Practitioners are taking the field over and hospitals are not hiring as much family medicine doctors since it is cheaper to just have more NP's. If you have your own clinic FM can be very rewarding, but working in a large hospital system has its drawbacks

Wow! Dr. Shah is so wise, compassionate, and knowledgeable. Her patients are blessed to have her. Her joyful laughter is awesome. It was great to hear her advice to not come in with superiority judgment, but to help them embrace their strength. I also like how she uses pictures to explain complex ideas to her patients. She gave an excellent analogy about vaccines (in general) as showing your immunity army what the enemy is like. The only thing I would disagree with her is that most of the covid vaccines are called vaccines for liability purposes to avoid lawsuits; but they are really experimental gene therapy, not normal vaccines with dead or attentuated diseases. Thank you for a fantastic interview! God bless you.

It’s a dying field . Brutal truth no one is taking about. With below avg skill set and job satisfaction. U will struggle your whole life in this field from financially, academically, zero respect. Not saying from me own data, talked a lot of doc more than 100.
