The autonomic nervous system controls contractions of the allometric canal that moves swallowed food down the oesophagus, churn the stomach and move chyme through the small intestine and large intestine. The allometric canal is a single, continuous tube that includes the oral cavity, the oesophagus, the stomach and the small + large intestines.
The tissue layers that form the walls of the tube include two layers of smooth muscle. The contraction and relaxation of these muscles is called peristalsis. One peristaltic wave can be enough to move a bolus down the oesophagus and into the stomach. In the intestines, the waves are smaller and more regular. As one section of the intestine contracts, the section in front relaxes. This occurs in a rhythmic, wave-like pattern that create the peristalsis that propels substances forwards.

im not even a student or anything but was just having trouble swallowing something, then was acutely aware that I'd just handed over the reigns to my body to carry on getting it down me. like the muscles go without any input from me, you just kind of forget about it once its swallowed. i know we know this but its fcking weird when you think about it. we are more than what know of ourselves in our minds.
