Cyprus is marking 40 years since the invasion by Turkey and its split into Greek and Turkish controlled areas. The island's capital, Nicosia, is the only divided capital in Europe.

Decades of hostility has in the last few years given way to meetings between leaders of the two separate areas, with a view to coming to a peaceful agreement on the island's future.

In the lead up to the anniversary of the invasion, Al Jazeera asked 500 residents on both sides of the divde whether they thought they would see the island reunited in their lifetimes.

Al Jazeera's Simon McGregor-Wood reports.

It is funny how they call them turkish Cypriots. They belong in Central Asia. Cyprus is an ancient country and nation. Turks invaded 400 years ago and they believe they are Cypriots. No federal states. Cyprus as a country as a whole. Europe is Christian.

Not sure where hr from, adam is not a turkish name. Perhaps u r a sympathiser of criminals who attempt to bully an ancient country. If ur true to urself please investigate the kurdish oppression and rights to self determination in turkey. Let them vote and come back and talk about rejection.

I don't think that the pro-enosis greek cypriots want peace and solution. They rejected 2004 UN Annan plan for united Cyprus.

Also,  Turkey has not invaded Cyprus. As a guarantor country,  Turkey used the rights arising from the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee.
