REVIEW: Bloody Apple Pencils! Latency Fail in Slow-Mo!

The Apple Pencil seems on first tests to have a terrible latency where it draws slow and with a delay.

This test was done with an in store pen which could of been low on juice. Also I did not monitor how much I was zoomed in for each test. I'm a bit of an idiot.

There is a big difference between the two videos you just showed, to my eyes. I think the obvious evidence for this is how much better and smaller the pencil writing was. Also you have to judge how far the line gets from the centre of your stylus point and considering the big rubber tip is also much wider there is an additional distance to add onto the visible gap. Even without the obscured gap there is twice the latency in the rubber tip one I'd say. Either way it's about what's noticeable in real time, otherwise it's a bit like criticising Retina display because you can see the pixels with a magnifying glass 😑

You write pretty slowly with the second pen. Anyway, there is lag, especially in apps with advanced brushes. But the question is: Do you notice it when not looking at it in slow motion? In my opinion, only a few apps has a lag free feeling, like Procreate, Apples own apps. Anyway, I was also disappointed about the lag, but only when carefully looking for it. I don't feel much when actually using it.

I have no idea why there are so many dislikes. Really appreciate the points you made! I was considering getting an Apple Pencil for drawing but the videos so far showing it in action are pointing towards it being consistently mediocre. Anyone who really thinks otherwise is probably just buying into all that hype.

Thanks for the post. I am very curious to try it out for myself. I am a wacom user and the apple keynote made the ipad pro look superior, but your video makes me think otherwise.

As for your concern about the abrasiveness of the stylus, glass is a very hard material and cannot be scratched by plastic, not even by most metal objects. If you are brave you can try gently scratching your screen with your keys and it will not scratch. The most common way screens get scratched is by sand since sand is just as hard as glass (glass is made from sand).

Of course if you film it that way then its show the lag. However back in the real world, I have a pro and pencil and believe me it is VERY responsive. From quick sketches to note taking am I very happy!! And looking forward to using with astopad do control photoshop.
