This is a concept that i love. Electra made a modular version of this back in the 70s, one of which i have, but unfortunately it never got popular.

Matt Bellamy from Muse has been doing this for decades with the Fuzz Factory. And when Brian May was building his red special, he planned to put a fuzz pedal in it, but he decided he didn’t like the sound of the fuzz pedal.

Brian May's Red Special guitar used to have that kind of distortion, though it was removed in favor of the treble booster pedal.

The removed opening was covered by a red dot in the 1970s, a black tape in the 1980s, or a white star (as seen today) after the 1998 restoration.

Fender dropped the Steve Lacy “People Pleaser” Stratocaster with an onboard Fuzz circuit a couple of months ago. Very similar to this except it’s an S1 switch on the volume control rather than a 2 way switch like they do here
