Wire up the trailer lights in the best aftermarket hitch for the Tesla Model Y.

********Update. Make sure you put the in-line fuse right off the battery. Not where I did at the back of the car. It is much safer up front ************

My 5 cents here: i think it is better to move the fuse close to the battery (wire insulation might fail somewhere along), black wire might be considered as negative.

When there is a trailer, I wonder if the car in autopilot can still detect other cars behind when doing a change of lane?

Haha now that was an ending worth watching. Thank you for making my wife and I laugh so hard lol. I love the sense of humor Brian.

I recall Sandy Munro showed a single Tesla OEM electrical connector prepped and ready to use with their trailer hitch. This was before they even offered the Tesla trailer hitch option. In short, no need to find turn signals, brake lights etc.

Can you try to show how it looks like when having a trailer attached, in particular one from U-Haul.
One thing to demonstrate is how easier or difficult it would be to attach and detach the security chains.
Can you measure how much additional time it would take when using a supercharger, by finding a spot to park a trailer,
detach it and then going to the supercharger. Then coming back, re-attach the trailer and go?

Great video but I'm wondering if it's really necessary to run that 12V wire to the front instead of finding 12V somewhere in the rear?

You definitely don’t want to use autopilot with a trailer, AP doesn’t know that the length of the vehicle has changed. If the vehicle swerve to avoid an obstacle on the road the trailer will most likely hit the vehicle in the next lane, auto pilot doesn’t know the length of the vehicle has changed. Brian this is a bad advise but I love the channel. I look forward for watching more videos.

Thanks Brian, This helped me confirm the factory tow hitch is a bargain at $1000.

About the trailer lights, you missed the backup light.
Those white light are not only to provide some light (unless you maneuver only during the day...)
but also to indicate to other drivers that you are maneuvering.

Brian, it is not too far. I put the hitch wiring in the model 3 and had to open up all kinds of things. I ran a 10ga for extra capacity for a 12v socket or power trunk from the front battery, through the firewall, along the passenger door sills and up and over the rear wheel to the sub compartment. That is where I mounted the light module right to the sub mounting arm which was really convenient. I was able to run the wiring out to the hitch right through an existing plug which I used as a grommet for the wiring which was in the back of the trunk tub. There are actually these plugs on each side in the back. Through the plug it could go down to the hitch area outside. I have always had a supply of and ran all wiring in plastic flexible split loom everywhere to protect it. I have always run everything in loom. I have been using the lighting and hitch for a 24x60 aluminum hitch platform which has rear lights built into it. If I told you what I did in wiring and equipping an older 88 camry that I used, it would be much more than anything we will probably do to the model 3. It went from entirely removing the dash, to soundproofing the roof and flooring to making the windows auto roll up with remote control and on and on as well as remote start, honk, alarm paging, 120v inverter wiring etc.

Busted a gut laffin at your last comment. Brilliant! Thanks for taking the time to video your work. Your narration is very good.

For a rear need for 12 v you can attach a wire to the 12v terminal on the right side of the penthouse below the back seat.

Somehow I suspect Tesla disables autopilot while towing for a reason...

UH - OH, Brian, You made a mistake. You must put the fuse at the battery end, not in the back where the controller is. If the wire you have run develops a short. It can start a fire! By putting the fuse at the battery end, it protects the entire wire run. The fuse will burn out before the massive electrical current can start a fire. When connecting to a battery, always fuse it at the battery end or very close to it. Most all vehicles even have what is called a fuseable link which is a short piece of wire ( approx 6 inches long) similar to what you ran that connects the battery to the fuse box. It is situated so it is not near anything flammable In the event of a major short or overload. This link overheats and melts breaking the circuit. In your case you now have a 15 foot long fusable link that runs up against other meltable/flammable materials. This wire could allow up to 100 amps or more for long enough to start things on fire.

14:50 Since you were inspecting some undercover location... could you check the possible attachments for a third row seat and seat belt?

Tesla were talking about some type of tow mode. Presumably if it didn’t know your towing, it won’t enable those features. Am I remembering that right? Or was it just for cyber truck?

@i1Tesla Brian, where do the safety chains connect on the hitch? Do they rub against the plastic surround?
