Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious complication of diabetes mellitus that results from an absolute or relative insulin deficiency, leading to hyperglycemia, ketosis, and metabolic acidosis. Insulin deficiency causes the liver to convert fatty acids into ketones, which accumulate in the blood and cause the pH to become acidic. The resulting metabolic acidosis leads to electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, and potentially life-threatening complications such as cerebral edema and cardiac arrhythmias. Prompt medical intervention with fluid and electrolyte replacement, insulin therapy, and close monitoring is essential to prevent DKA-related mortality.

Dr. Aklesh Tandekar, Critical Care Specialist, MD, EDIC, IDCCM, FIMSA, DA, FCPS, FISCCM, talks about the pathophysiology of diabetic ketoacidosis
