I remember there was a changedotorg petition going around my college to revoke someone’s equity grant because he was actively racist, homophobic, etc. The admins of the petition were forced to take it down because the person who was granted the money got lawyers to contact changedotorg and threatened legal action. Ik this has little to do with the points you’ve brought up but it does show that the “philanthropic organization” cares more about money than justice

For the UK equivalent of the government petition site, 10, 000 signatures will get a response and 100, 000 will be considered for debate in parliament.

Just made a petition. It literally took 30 seconds and they just about asked for my email much less and bank details so there’s no way they could give me any donations should someone donate. I’m always suspicious when sites show people that donate( eg “Sam donated £5”) since they’re almost definitely bots but the fact they don’t even check if you’re human says it all

Questions I have:
• do the petitions even work? How many actually change things? Is there data about this? (This is what I've been looking for)
• what about petitions without donations? Honestly I didn't even know they had a donation feature.
• a good feature that has change org that other webs haven't is that a user can sign petitions to change things in other countries. I don't think your gov webpage lets people from outside the US to support causes there.
• Very often you get citizens from other countries to ask for help through change org. What other options do they really have? Is it better to actually create and promote a hashtag?

Absolutely so! There are other 'petition sites' that are similarly ineffective while petitions on Government sites send a more direct message to those who can influence things. In UK Govt petitions lead to feedback on when topics are discussed, links to live streams, notification to MPs of the nos. of people signing and more. Change petitions do none of the above, just use your email address to send you more petitions in the future while requesting 'donations' to do so.
