Auckland's ADL diesel units on their Last Day in Service (HD)

Показать описание
On August 12th, 2022 the ADL / ADC diesel multiple units (originally used in Perth, Australia) ran their final services on the Papakura to Pukekohe shuttle. These units had been running in Auckland since 1993, and helped to save suburban rail in the city.

(Technically their last service was in the early hours of August 13th, but the 12th was their last full day in service).

Currently the Pukekohe train service is suspended while electrification is being extended down from Papakura. Once this is finished, Pukekohe will regain direct train service to central Auckland.

Saw a consist of 2 sets of ADL units crossing Glenbrook Station Road at 8:00 this morning. By the evening, 4 sets were parked at the Glenbrook Vintage Railway station and sidings.

when I was young I went on these ADL DMU's a lot andd I love them because they have comfy seats and they're a very comfortable ride. I want these DMU's to come back again in the future because they're my most favourite trains.

A decade ago with Auckland's railway electrification approaching; I wondered if these units could also be used to bring suburban rail back to another NZ city.
Christchurch was the obvious candidate with its town centre (then) recently flattened by an earthquake, thus an opportunity to build a new railway terminus closer to the town centre than the old Moorhouse avenue site. But that was not to be; Christchurch let that one pass them by. But I think they still could've been used in Tauranga & western BOP, Dunedin or Waikato/Hamilton.

But sadly none of that happened. With the units now approaching 40 years old; I expect they're too worn-out & had it to be used again for regular suburban services. Second hand DMU's with enough years left in them and in cape gauge aren't exactly anything that becomes available very often.

these ADL class DMU's should start to be used on the auckland and hamilton route. They're so beautiful and I'm thinking about them.

Shame I didn’t hear about them getting pulled out of service entirely until the day it happened. Hope some of them end up in preservation
