The 1970s sure were a different time. Kids bought cigarettes for their parents, Jimmy Carter was elected President, and “Disco Duck” was a hit on the radio - all things that just wouldn’t fly today. Over time what a society deems acceptable changes, and suddenly things that seemed alright forty five years ago make you cringe in hindsight. This is especially true in the world of 70s sitcoms, where jokes that had you rolling on the floor in 73 now make your jaw drop. I’m Nostalgic Nick for Doyouremember and today we’re going to be looking at some of the best 1970s sitcoms that just wouldn’t fly today. We had a sense of humor and thicker skin back then. There were shows that light-heartedly made fun of every group of people. All In the Family made fun of racists, The Jefferson’s showed a successful Black businessman and portrayed Whites as nerdy, Good Times demonstrated the struggle of a Black family living in an urban environment. I could go on. These shows were NOT racist or sexist. They poked fun at those that were.

Loved most of the sitcoms shown here. We watched them back in the good old days. Those were the days of the best tv shows. People are too sensitive today. We could laugh at ourselves back then. Not so today. Maybe that is why there are few really good shows today.

With the exception of the last three, all of the shows can be seen in syndication today. So no, they wouldn't be cancelled today.

When people say a show wouldn’t work today, what they really mean is that the executives of a network would be too cowardly to put controversial material on the air. If they did, at the very worst, there would just be a myriad of snowflakes complaining online. As long as the ratings are high, it shouldn’t be a problem.
