My first ever character, Nathaniel Dragonheart is known to use a shield as an improvised weapon sometimes. No it doesn't always work, it really didn't work when I try am I first campaign with him but in other games I use him in, it has worked. I cut a gelatinous Cube in half with it and knocked out four fish people with it as well. Improvised weapons like throwing a pillar at another pillar causing explosion and sending an undead dragon into another realm and he also chucked a small fish person a giant sea serpent.

My favorite to this day is an artifact now known as the Boot of Ignis Mortis.

Long story short, we were battling the second to last boss of this adventure. Of the 4 party members, 2 were down, one was straight up dead, and the last was a Wizard who randomly took Tavern Brawler cause he could and thought it was sick. Out of spells, potions, and his staff broken by demons, our Wizard grabbed the dead Monks boot and absolutely smacked the boss with it. It dealt 5 dmg, which happened to be the bosses remaining health, killing it. After reviving the rest of the still living party, our Wizard spun a yarn that this boot is the legendary Boot of Ignis Mortis crafted by ancients in the fire plane and protected by ancient red dragons this boot could destory the world... It obviously wasn't true, but the DM liked it so much in the next game it became our Mcguffin 🎉
