According to Billboard, Prince himself wrote the parody as a promotional tie-in with his own single. The song was originally scheduled to be performed on a Prince-themed episode of The Simpsons in early 1993. The episode was never completed after the show’s creators had disagreements with Prince over the script.

In 1993, “My Name Is Bart” appeared on promotional copies of the second Simpsons music compilation, The Yellow Album. The album’s release was delayed, and when it finally hit stores in 1998, “My Name Is Bart” was not on it. It is a parody of the Prince and The New Power Generation song "My Name Is Prince".
