How have deprivation powers evolved since 9/11?
This event, organised by the Institute on Statelessness (ISI) and Inclusion and the Global Citizenship Observatory (GLOBALCIT), launch a new report that provides a global comparative analysis of legislation on deprivation of nationality as a national security measure as well as marking the publication of the finalized Commentary to the Principles on Nationality Deprivation as a National Security Measure. Together, these two resources offer a global picture of the current state of play of nationality deprivation powers and how these have evolved since 9/11, as well as an in-depth international law analysis of the measure.
The event was introduced and moderated by Tendayi Achiume (UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance) and the report findings will be presented by ISI and GLOBALCIT.
Two discussants were invited to comment:
Anne Charbord - International human rights lawyer focusing on human rights and security and senior legal advisor to the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism.
Berkay Mandıracı - Expert on Turkey at the International Crisis Group, covering both internal security and a number of foreign policy issues. Among issues he is specialised in are policies towards ISIS returnees.
