Check User Sign Up Name Tutorial Javascript Ajax PHP for Social Network Community

In this lesson you will get a free script example to copy and paste plus a video guide on the programming logic involved to accomplish checking a user's name in your sign up form using a simple JavaScript Ajax post to PHP. The PHP will check our mysql database to see if the username is already taken or not and lets the user know right away while they are filling out your sign up form.

@flashbuilding at that time, I just wanted to know why :) now that you and 0syntrax0 explained, I can see the point of doing it the "longer way". I did not look up the AJAX methods used by jQuery at its source, but I assume, that they are more or less the same in their nature with the ones you wrote.
My comment is, that i never needed to learn AJAX directly - I went straight for jQuery's methods. I think of jQuery as a tool, that helps us save some time in writing our code

Maybe you can also make it so that the background of the input becomes a green-white gradiet when the name is ok, and a red-white gradiet when the name is already in use.
I have also done this and it's not hard.
