“I was inspired by Charlie XCX’s song, “1999” so I thought I’d take the next year, “Y2K.” I’m naturally a very nostalgic person and growing up as a young consumer in the early 2000’s I was heavily influenced by what I saw around me. I was at the age where I started to notice fashion and aesthetics so I tried to include the most memorable things to me. My middle school had a rollerskating night that I loved, I secretly bought my first thong, we all had piles of CD’s and watched “The Simple Life” with Paris Hilton. Fast-forwarding to 2020, I’ve never felt so nostalgic for those days as I do now. They may be just materialistic things that I’m singing about in the song but it represents a simpler time when the world was changing from an analog way of life to a digital one. That time period was the last time humanity didn’t interact with the internet as intimately as we do now, and will do from here on out. Being a millennial, we’ve been growing up right alongside technology so we have a special place in our hearts for clunky technology and the charmingly horrible fashion of the time.”
