Elementary has "Eddy" deb installer

Thanks for making this video. As a person who likes to solve computer problems I forget how frustrating these things can be to the average person. I agree that things should "just work". There should be no need to use terminal for anything now but so many of us Linux users are nerds so we just tremble with excitement at any excuse to open terminal. We need to make sure that there is a clear separation between distros that are terminal friendy and reject the terminal. I know Endless OS has figured out how to get rid of terminal stuff. I think Linux Mint tries hard to be like this as well.

UPDATE: This is probably for good reason given we have Eddy, and... wait it wanted to open DEBs in AppCenter... Interesting.

GDEBI is probably still on its ancient version from Ubuntu 18.04 which IIRC may or may not still use the defunct 'gksu' command for authenticating to install packages... which is long gone in 18.04 and onwards.

Aka Elementary forgot to update GDEBI... because better alternatives exist for elementary.

I installed Linux Lite 4.0. 3/25/2018. Upgraded through current 4.8. 0 issues.

Its not an elementary bug its a long standing issue with changes in gksudo and gdebi has not been updated to use Polkit so it does not show the root password prompt which is why no install happens. Use Eddy from elementary store

had lots of problem while testing this, i see this advertised as a friendly lightweight distro and its nowhere near those claims. used to like this distro but it seems to be getting worse all the time

I'll ask again, will Chrome - once installed from a deb file - update, or are you stuck with the same version, foregoing security patches and updates until you go looking for a new build on the website?

Loved your video! If you have to go through all of this to install Chrome, that's pathetic. When I try out distros if I go to do something that should be easy or is missing a simple feature, I ditch it right away because a new user wants something that just works.

My own personal favorite and I would not recommend this distro to a new user is bionicpup. It's super easy to setup things like samba, wallpaper, default apps etc.. there is a learning curve and it's fun to use but for a first time user, no.

Based on this video I will definitely NOT recommend elementary os to someone coming over from Windows. It should just work. I use bionicpup and when I installed Chrome, it just worked. Easy!!

I have tried many distros and am still not sure what distro to recommend to a new user coming over from Windows. What would you recommend? I was thinking Linux mint or maybe zorin? A distro that would be enticing to someone coming from Windows. Just your average windows user. Thanks!!

Download and use Eddy or Gdebi to install .deb files with ease. Failing that, open a terminal in your Downloads folder (cd /Downloads) and then run the following command

sudo dpkg -i nameofpackagefile.deb

The reason people encorage you to use terminal is because it gives you better debuging output.thats one of advantages over windows and mac when you get someting like code "x3565322e" or "whoops something gone wrong try later"

I think that perhaps by the time a computer user wants to come to Linux, they are prepared to use Linux and all that it entails. Someone who isn't interested will stick with Windows or go to Mac and if you make Linux too Windows-like, then they will remain in the Windows mindset - never to learn, and never to grow technically.

gdebi is the exact opposite of "newbie friendliness". The UI is a disaster, I wouldn't know what the buttons do if I hadn't ever used it. Even "Install Package" looks like a "Show info" button, there is no accent color, accurate widget borders etc. And also what is a "package"? is it a program or executable or something? That's not newbie friendly terms and downloading .deb files over internet and instal them locally is obviously not also a newbie friendly thing. Even if you absolutely need to install an unknown .deb file -which is not secure at all- there is an app called "Eddy" which does this in a better and better way. It does not contain strange terms like "package" "status" or "lintian output" -Really?? lintian output?- It says just "Install" with a decent accent color and shows the name of the application instead of the filename which is "newbie friendly". I watch a lot of your videos and I sense a bad mental fatigue in you. You really complain about a lot of things because they are not intended for **your** way of use. I understand that you might have different workflow habits but this doesn't make the creators of the stuff you are checking out thoughtless, cruels to newbies and lummox people.
