Seeing just the turkish kebab place in the middle of anime den like that and the turkish man with no japanese embellishments whatsoever casually speaking japanese gave me mental whiplash. It's like the man got installed a Japanese Localization add-on mod that changes NOTHING except translation.

An older Turkish man speaking fluent Japanese scratches a part of my brain that I didn’t know was there.

As a turkish person, it’s an accepted fact that the first thing most turks do when they go abroad is open a restaurant lol

I love that the friendly neighborhood Kebab Guy is seemingly a universal constant no matter where you are.

That man sharpening his giant ass knives outside in Japan with anime pictures everywhere is so cool.

He is like that one foreigner in anime who owns a business and the main cast occassionally interacts with, like Simon from Durarara lol

I'm German and we have a big Turkish-based community, especially where I live, so it's super normal to me to see a kebab shop, but this older gentleman just casually speaking Japanese while running such a shop really kinda startled me. I mean, he's been there for 19 years, you'd expect him to speak the language, especially if he runs a business, but I guess I've just never seen an older Turkish person speak anything besides Turkish, German or English.

it's so strange to see somewhere i've been before covered here, his brother (i assume it's his brother) runs the ice cream stand next to him it's really cool

I swear, the first thing Turkish people do if they decide to live somewhere else is checking if there’re any kebab shops around. If not they just build one themselves. You have to respect that love for good food

It’s so interesting to hear the Turkish Japanese accent. I’m so familiar with a Turkish English accent, and there are so many subtle similarities even though Japanese and English are so different

I’m a regular customer of his as I live nearby. I grew up in the UAE so I miss being able to have a good shawarma. This guy is as close as I can get to tasting home! The restaurant itself is also great.

Tip from a chef to everyone: the smaller the menu the better the food. The reason is three fold

1 mastering a dish can take time and patience, splitting your attention while working under a chef cooking large menus makes it hard to absorb lessons

2 the chef is “usually” of a culinary dynasty of some sorts even if moved, meaning there is relationship to the culture and flavors it originates from, smaller places can only get 1 or 2 employees to help and learn

And 3 the food has to be good or it won’t survive. It’s a simple question of quality or quantity.

Eat local and visit farmers markets.

This was so fun to watch🎉🎉 He's fully embracing Japan by learning the language and happily sharing his cultural food and enriching the community😊 Here in Nigeria, we have so many kebab shops and Turks are some of the most friendly people i have met.
