I saw this movie in 1966, when I was 15. There was an entire section of the theatre taken up by boys that age, and when Claudia Cardinale opened her top for Burt Lancaster there was a howl of lust that you could hear blocks away. It's remained one of my favorites ever since. Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin were terrific together. I loved Lancaster's description of Lt. Si Si Chiquita: "Now there's a woman worth a ranson. She never says no." One of the best Westerns ever.

This movie has all the ingredients of a great western of the 60's era. Great scenery, big name actors. A little slower pace than some westerns but that allows for some great chances to observe some fine acting skills.

I always loved this movie. It always reminded me of Sam Peckinpah's "The Wild Bunch" (my personal favourite western).

It's a pity it wasn't as graphic as "The Wild Bunch", it would have given it that extra bit of punch.

Interestingly both Marvin and Lancaster were approached by Peckinpah for the lead role of "Pike" in "The Wild Bunch" but turned it down. The part eventually going to William Holden who was excellent in the role.

Of course Robert Ryan did star in "The Wild Bunch" as Deke Thornton.
