How to finish wood can be a bit of a puzzle to solve. It can depend upon the type of wood work you do and the use that the finished wood is required for.

Here at The Lovespoon Workshop our tried and tested method for finishing is Shellac sanding sealer. When we first started, we spent much time trying different methods to finish our love spoons, but for twenty years plus we have stuck with this method we feel is the best for finishing wood. We use Fiddes Shellac sanding sealer and this video shows the method used to apply it to decorative wooden items.

Follow the link below to buy Fiddes Shellac sanding sealer. This is NOT an affiliate ink and our family workshop does not have any link to Fiddes other than purchasing and using their fantastic product ourselves.

Please be aware that the items we make are for decorative purposes and if you are finishing items for wood consumption and other purposes Shellac sanding sealer is not suitable. It is a relatively quick and effective method from bringing out the character and colour of the grain, sealing the wood, whilst providing the wood with a natural looking sheen finish.

For regular updates about the things we are doing find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by searching for The Lovespoon Workshop.

Remember to take care and ALWAYS ensure your own safety when working with wood working tools and machinery. If in doubt don't do it!!

On my shellac sealing sand bottle it says as a finishing coat you can do 50/50 shellac and methylated spirit. Is this okay to do? What are your thoughts or tips on that?

Our workshop always thin the shellac with 95% denatured alcohol so the whole coat dries faster, plus it'd make applying more smooth

The term "sanding sealer" has often been misused in the wood industry and no doubt confused heaps of people. A "sanding sealer" is applicable for surface leveling and to ease the sanding process as an intermediate protective layer (e.g. shellac) below the final finishing (e.g. lacquer). In the case of the video, the shellac is probably the final finish. The shellac will also effectively block penetrating oils and if it works in your case, the shellac is probably diluted well below the 1 lb cut in a "sanding sealer".
