Singapore is surrounded by "dubious friendly" countries who would not hesitate to see its demise. Hence, Singapore's state of the art defence built over the years served as a deterrence to countries seeking some unwelcome adventures.

Israel still advises Singapore's national defense since Singapore's independence. Singapore did not choose Israel but Israel was the only one helped when everyone elsewhere refused. So even Singapore Armed Forces' first generation uniform Temasek Green also copied from Israel Defense Forces.

Singapore saw immediate military necessity to defend itself, mostly due to 1966~1998 Indonesian dictator Suharto's New Order invaded East Timor, West Papua and Kalimantan (Southern Borneo). Singapore instead never really sees Malaysia as its biggest threatening neighbor, because both Singapore and Malaysia are economic-military partners in the Five Power Defense Arrangements (F.P.D.A.) meaning their disputes would only damage their mutual interests and trusts from other 3 members. (Australia, New Zealand, Britain)

From a national security perspective, Singapore needs to develop and grow its military-industrial complex and defence capabilities gradually without alarming its immediate neighbors. It's imperative that Singapore depends on itself much more than on others. We do need reliable friends, though. The more, the better.

Hopefully my country’s SAF continues to execute its main mission of dettering misison with diplomacy as our best weapon and our military as our last resort only.

As warfare evolves, so does our Armed forces in both doctrine and practice in technology use and all.

There is much to be done, but from what I can see, our ability to defend ourselves is guaranteed . Sure we don’t have combat experience but the number of military exercises with big nations like Australia, China, America, etc further strengthens not just confidence, but also trust and faith in the SAF’s capabilities to defend the island when the time calls

South East Asia had its turmoils from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s. However with ASEAN, a certain level of peace has prevailed & that has helped these countries progressed economically. Singapore benefited well with this peace & progressed well economically, also knows very well that without ASEAN, they are no where.

I believe buying military equipment from other countries comes with a lot of T&C. It's not as simple as going to an electronics stores to buy what Sgp wants. What we do not see are the fine prints. And countries who make these weapons will use them as bargaining chips to get what they want from Sgp. Of course, the best option is for Sgp to manufacture their own.

The SAF also have other locally designed and manufactured war material: the SAR-21 infantry assault rifle, the Pegasus, an artillery that can be airlifted below Chinook helicopters. The latter used to be best in its class. The Bronco used by the British in Iraq. A black dune buggy for military uses which I think is not protected enough. And the SAW weapon but it has been phased out.

The Sg Government has spent a big budget on R&D and likely produces enough to sell to other countries.
