1. PULL UP
MEANING: Lift upwards or vertically
EXAMPLE: I pull up the lever when I want to make my car go into first gear.
2. PULL APART:
MEANING: Become separated as a result of pulling
EXAMPLE: A weak rope will pull apart.
3. PULL OVER: MEANING: Come to a stop, and turn off the road
EXAMPLE: Can you pull over just after the post office? My house is next door.
4. PULL AWAY:
MEANING: Move ahead
EXAMPLE: The bus pulled away from the station around noon.
5. PULL OUT:
MEANING: withdraw or move out from the side of the road
EXAMPLE: He was forced to pull out of the competition because of an injury or as he turned round the corner a police car pulled out in front of him.
6. PULL IN:
MEANING: Pull something, so that it comes inside
EXAMPLE: The party was able to pull in 10% of the vote
7. PULL ON:
MEANING: inhale deeply while smoking a pipe, cigarette or cigar or to hold onto and pull something repeatedly or to hold onto and move something towards oneself
EXAMPLE: He pulled on the cigarette and blew the smoke at him. Or When she gets nervous, she pulls on her ear. Or She pulled on the rope with all her power.
8. PULL OFF:
MEANING: succeed in achieving or winning something difficult or move to the side of the road (a vehicle)
EXAMPLE: He pulled off a brilliant first round win or There is no place to pull off (referring to no parking space)
