Very interesting. Good writing and narration. However, I have to condemn the giraffe hunt. The only motive I can guess is some compulsion from a primitive gene to engage in animal sacrifice. In those rituals the best animals are selected for offerings to the gods. The author went through a difficult, possibly masochistic, effort to kill harmless animals he supposedly admired. He didn’t even take a trophy head but left them for the scavengers. No concern either about the giraffe he wounded and doomed to a lingering painful death. Very strange.
Just heard the part about the elephant hunt. That’s pretty shameful too. He wounded an animal that suffered for 43 days and just thought it was curious. At least the elephants presented some danger to him and the natives used the meat. I’ve read about other big game hunters who tracked injured animals for days as a matter of honor and compassion.
