This reminds me viscerally of being a small child running loose after hours while sleeping over with my camping troupe at SciWorks. Hearing the deep hum of the machines, the quiet pitpat of my little feet hitting concrete, carrying my pillow the size of my whole body, trying not to laugh too loud with my friends as we "escaped" to be night owls in the halls. This is the sound of freedom, to me. I grew up isolated and heavily monitored, so this kinda white noise just takes me to a place where no scary adults live. Where things are empty, quiet, dark and glowing, and endless. There only existed me and my curiosity, and I was safe from the world. I wish I could spend a few nights sleeping over at a science center again.

One of the reasons this is so soothing and peaceful is that this the sound the umbilical cord makes inside the womb. You heard this noise for 9 months straight when there was no hot or cold, no danger, no hunger, no loneliness. You lived inside your mommy and, regardless of what your relationship with you she had/has, for this 9-month period all you had from her body was unconditional love and protection.

(I'm writing this as my newborn daughter fell asleep in my arms. White noise always helps😊)
