In 1990, having failed to secure a cruiserweight world title fight, Cooper moved to heavyweight permanently, knocking out top 5-ranked Orlin Norris and claiming his NABF title. He lost the title in his first defense, outpointed over 12 by undefeated Olympic gold medallist Ray Mercer in an explosive brawl. Later the same year he was KO'd in 2 rounds by fast-rising Riddick Bowe and his career looked over. However Cooper bounced back in 1991, stopping Joe Hipp in 5 rounds

Sad to see the ref stop the fight, no knock down, not even staggered, Hipp seemed game to fight even though a little tired.

Bert was another tough guy, who posed a lot of problems for great boxers. He was a specialist in close quarters, very violent hand - to-hand combat, which he usually ended by an uppercut. RIP

Wow, haven't seen Joe Hipp, since the late 80's and 90's, fighting guys like Tommy Morrison, Bruce Seldon(for the heavyweight championship) and Jose Ribalta. Always a fearless and entertaining fighter and one might add, he was the resident southpaw before Michael Moorer came along. And may have been the only Native American at that time in the Heavyweight Division. lol, yeah early Refed Joe Cortez fights always got stop prematurely, he would stop the fight if your mouth piece fell out back in the day.

IF a ref stops a fight waaay too soon, they should be penalized via their paycheck. There is a point when a guy is out and a point where he's just in trouble. Hipp was banging that whole fight and suddenly, a few unanswered punches and no.... he was actually throwing back WHEN the ref stepped in. ? I mean, yeah, he took a beating but he wasn't out on his feet.

Joe hipp is one of my neighbor who happens to be one of my 3 good friends, dad and one good friends grandfather may she rest in peace his granddaughter ❤ also may his wife rest in peace 💜. The fight was stopped too early. The strange thing though is that this was a very important fight for Cooper because his win earned him a title shot against Evander Holyfield the following month. Of course he lost that fight but it could be argued that Cooper's victory over Hipp was his biggest ever win at heavyweight. Bert was more suited to the cruiserweight division where he achieved great success. RIP Bert Cooper: 1966-2019.
