They should not have married. They barely knew each other, he was too old for her, they weren't compatible---but perhaps most significantly, he was in love with Camilla. Diana knew but I think she (thought she) loved him and foolishly thought *her* love, youth and beauty would win him over.

Diana was young, idealistic and naive when he propsed. As the older, more sophisticated man, he should have told his family, who supported this marriage, NO, and not married her, but then, as now, he was weak. He claims he went into the marriage with the intention of making it work (giving up his mistress); I doubt it. Even if he did, it's clear he never really did give up Camilla. I think he thought he should have his wife *and* mistress and Diana should just be happy to be a privileged princess, mother to her boys, and eventual queen.

Diana was no picnic, she had her issues, but I think they mainly stemmed from the fact that Charles didnt love her, and wasn't interested in a real marriage and family with her---she'd been used. She was hurt, angry, humiliated, so she lashed out.

Both their lives were ruined for a time, and worse, their boys suffered too.

They never should have married.
