Overwintering GERANIUM: How to Store your Geranium through the Winter

Geranium are one of my absolute top picks when it comes to overwintering. When you find the right geranium that performs exactly as you want, you want to hold on to them with your dear life! Just like my grandma would do every winter in Indiana. In this video I clearly show you how to overwinter your geranium (Pelargonium species) and what to do the following spring when it is time to wake them back up. #geranium #pelargonium #overwintering

I treat them as house plants and have flowers all winter inside. Comes Spring, I repot them and trim them. Been doing this for years

I just take the pot, leaves and flowers still on, and put it in my cool unfinished basement. In late spring, I bring it up, cut it back and top with a good layer of compost. Same for my calllas and canas.

I dig mine up end September, put in a pot, bring indoors (just removing dead leaves) and water a bit. I keep by a sunny window, enjoy the flowers. Replant in warm early summer

I like to prune them and bit, clean them up and place them in a sunny window. Give them some food and watch them bloom in the house during the gloomy winter months! I am also in PA outside of Philadelphia. Nice video😊

This blows my mind. My grandfather told me this is EXACTLY what my great-grandmother did with her geraniums, and I couldn't fathom how it would work. Thanks for showing us!

I've never overwintered before so I'm new to all this. I've watched several videos on overwintering geraniums, but this is the best one I've seen so far. Great visual instructions.
BTW... love your grandma!

This is a great method to overwinter geranium! But make sure your garage does not get down to freezing temps. It has to be at least just above freezing for the geranium to survive.

I keep indoor as houseplant, my zone is 3, take pots outdoor after last frost days, even winter time, put in front of south windows, it keeps flowering all year round.

Those pieces you clip off in the spring (with a few 'nodes')
can also be rooted in small pots in a sunny window.
It's a good way to make additional plants, beyond overwintering.
When they look as though they are thriving, transplant to its summer pot.

I have about a 50-75% success rate with my new starts, probably better if I had ideal conditions.

This video was recommended to me and I'm so happy it was! I also live in Eastern PA, I really want to save a beautiful Geranium I got from my favorite Nursery this past spring, and this was just the information I need to do that! Mine is magenta with a white splash in the middle! I love how you mention your grandmother and those memories as well!

Thank you so much for this video. I'm tight for space and have 20 baskets to fill every year. This will save me so much money, to spend on more flowers of course. Best video on overwintering bare root! Hope to be successful 🙏🏻 😊

Cutting all the flowers off isn’t quite so bad if you put them in a vase with water and enjoy them as cut flowers, they’re quite nice that way!

Thank you for saying what I needed to hear about deciding whether to store them. Usually I bring my giant geraniums into our dining room for the winter and they bloom all winter. But this year I’m having construction done and I don’t have the space so I’ve been trying to decide whether to bring them in or just let them go. They aren’t special in any way except that they’re really large. Maybe I’ll keep a few cuttings but I think I’m going to just leave them outside to die in cold and start over in the spring. When you spoke about your grandmother’s geraniums, I remembered the red geraniums that I saw hanging from window boxes in Spain many years ago.

Always enjoy your sediments on memory plants. Funny you should mention the geraniums, a funny memory for me. About 10-15 years ago I had a not-so-great geranium variety that I was going to let live out the summer in its pot mixed in with the other summering houseplants. About 5 years before that a friend at a past employer made a few leaf cuttings of her oxalis which did very well for me, so well they seeded in that sad little geranium pot that summer. I feel the geranium outsmarted me so the two will be together forever.
