Introducing the new Apple: live from WWDC 2014

Apple had a lot to talk about at WWDC 2014. There was no hardware, but there was plenty of new stuff to talk about. Tim Cook and Craig Federighi took turns announcing new versions of iOS and OS X, with new features and designs on both sides. But they spent most of their time talking about how Apple devices talk to each other, how apps can work together, and how Apple is taking a new, friendlier, more inviting approach to the way it designs software. That may turn out to be much more important than a new Mac Mini ever could have been.

Good to see Joshua still works at The Verge

Craig Federighi is the next big thing from Apple. He manages to lead iOS development faster than ever before these past 2 years.

Exactly! This was what was the most important to me! The fact that they're opening up iOS, giving 4000 new APIs! People need to see how much of a change this is for Apple and how hard they've worked on this. It might seem like Apple just suddenly woke up and decided to open iOS to 3rd party widgets and keyboards and stuff like that, but it isn't like that, Apple has been working on these things probably for the last 2 to 3 years, remember? When Android actually started being good with Project Butter and Jelly Bean and now KitKat is awesome? iOS 7 was the re-birth of iOS's interface, but iOS 8 is the re-birth of iOS! iOS 8 will be the best mobile OS, there's just so many things that will make you feel so good! "Hey Siri" and TouchID being open for 3rd party apps are things that will improve your experience in huge ways! And on top of that if you have a Mac you'll have Continuity which is just fucking amazing! Windows Phone 8.1 has some of the things about Continuity but no where near it and Android? There's a little bit on Chrome and stuff but nothing like what Apple showed.

People criticize because they didn't get to see new hardware, people feel like "oh so just new software upgrades? and shit I don't even care about?" but this is WW fucking DC! That's what it's supposed to be! This is for developers, this is the software that will lay the groundwork for new devices and when Apple announces new devices and then shows sales numbers in early 2015 you'll see record breaking numbers! I used to love iOS, but Android just has gotten so many new things and with Nexus devices being awesome I just thought I would go for that, I was even wondering about Windows Phone 8.1 because Cortana and so many other things look awesome, but iOS 8 changes all of that! It's more than just catching up with Android, though there's a little bit of that, it's about new actual features that will improve quality of life and it's about the philosophy change at Apple, of opening up iOS into being much more open and still be super secure! It's more than just Apple doing what they do best, it's also about letting developers do what they do best!

Great reporting! Even with a denim jacket Josh still manages to look exceptionally sharp (take some notes Ross lol).

great coverage of the event. love to see Apple moving more desktop features, and a few features that Android even has, to their iPhones. also the new programming langiage is a HUGE deal considering how frustrating objective-c is....

That was the best wrap up though ;)
The new programing language and the Extensibility features are the Headlines of today's WWDC

I am an anti apple pro-google machine but to me it seems very very good that apple is switching to this more open style, the bit about being able to change keyboards to third party ones to me seems like a massive ambitious move because of how everyone currently see's them as a company

At the 4:30 mark, that line code nearly represents half python and half and obj-c. Declaring "var s" as a variable most likely got derived from obj-c. adding those two strings: "hello" + "WWDC" was most likely derived from python. How I know this? cause I just took my first class on learning about python today PST time.

The WWDC conference is a great example of why consumers always benefit from competition. We get a lot of new features coming from android and continue to enjoy the Apple ecosystem. It does make it very difficult to choose which operating system I will use the next time I'll buy a smartphone. For now I prefer an iOS tablets and an android phone.

So long story short...more Android features on iOS!!!

Most of these features are beyond cool. I never asked for widgets, but I like that they're at least out of the way. I definite don't want them dominating my phone. All of the continuity features are quite good. I'll be excited to switch from iPad or iPhone to Mac and back during tasks. I'm also excited to see AirDrop finally going iOS-OS X. I also really like the interplay between iOS and OS X as far as text messaging and phone calls go. I finally don't need to switch to my phone when I need to text a friend with a different OS. Oh, and now apps can talk to one another. Again. Cool.

Perhaps you all should see 8.1 WP preview. A LOT of what you see is the look/feel of WP and features/actions.

Cortana feature ripoff, etc.
