Yeah it's really ironic from every angle.
Lots of Modern Conservatives decry the Welfare State as Communist even though Karl Marx himself hated the welfare state.
Marx viewed the idea of Reform and Regulation as nothing more than a bribe to keep the proletariat from revolting.

Conservatism is a social ideology not an economic one. In Europe those who support the free market are called Liberals those who support government control are called progressives.

Bismarck was a Conservative because he was a monarchist and also because he criminalized abortion and homosexuality in the German empire echoing his socially conservative stance.
