The very first video played on MTV on August 1st 1981 at 12:01am. A moment in history for sure!

Came to the comments to see how many people would tell her that this was the first video to air on MTV. Y'all did not disappoint. 😂

Hi bisscute, the man on bass is the living legend Trevor Horn, who later made a career as a producer. He worked with bands such as Frankie goes to Hollywood, Yes, Propaganda, Seal, Grace Jones, the Art of Noise. He was also the producer for BandAid's "Do they know its Christmas".

Its not just the fact that it was MTV's first video, but that it was a cultural change happening right before your eyes and after nothing was ever the same in pop culture. And look where we are now. Music and Video in our pockets ala cell phones. Pretty amazing.

Released in 1979 and got to Number 1 in the UK. The guy with the glasses is the amazing producer, Trevor Horn.

I was renting a house with two other friends when MTV began broadcasting August 1, 1981. We had a party to watch the broadcast kickoff. I remember this song/video and the second one, Pat Benatar's "You Better Run". After that, I remember The Who, "You Better You Bet"; The Pretenders, "Brass In Pocket" and "Message Of Love", REO Speedwagon "Keep On Loving You", J. Geils Band "Love Stinks", Nick Lowe "Cruel To Be Kind", Phil Collins "In The Air Tonight", Split Enz "I Got You", Tom Petty & Stevie Nicks "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around"...but for us the weirdest one was Talking Heads "Once In A Lifetime". Everyone who saw that one had a "WTF was that?" reaction.

We spent the rest of the summer with rotating parties to watch MTV for hours at nights and on the weekends...back when they actually played music videos.

Biss this was a HUGE moment in music history. MTV debuted and from that moment on a good video could make any band/artist huge, while at the same time, a bad video could crush any artist - see Billy Squier "Rock Me Tonight" - he went from selling millions of albums and headling 10, 000 seat arenas to selling thousands of albums and headling 1, 000 seat theaters.

I think everyone loves Bisscute's face. You're adorable.

Fun fact: this was Hans Zimmer's first band- you can see him in the video, playing the synthesizer, long before he ever made a movie soundtrack (Interstellar, the Batman films). This was the first music video on TV, but we can go deeper- there were the Scopitones, which were music videos played in movie theaters in the 1960s- check out "These Boots Were Made for Walking" by Nancy Sinatra for an example of an early Scopitone!

so, not only was it the very first music video to be played on MTV, but decades later when they reached their 1 millonth video, they aired it again to commorate the anniversary.

Yeah, once you hear this song, it never leaves your head. It's always fun to watch Biss's reactions. All the best.

(fun fact) ... the ORIGINAL lyric was "put the blame on V.T.R." (video tape recorder) ... it was later changed to V.C.R (video cassette recorder) .... the very first machines were stamped VTR .... these things are worth a small fortune

I was 18 and delivering pizzas. Every home I delivered to had MTV playing on cable, this was practically played every other hour.

Trevor Horn, lead singer on this, is also responsible for that bass! He went on to produce as others have said, but I don't think anyone mentioned that he also produced "All the Things She Said" and "Not Gonna Get Us" by t.A.T.u.

There is a tremendous live version of this performed for the 2004 Prince's Trust by the Buggles (and others-a lot of others). It is amazing to see and hear this song performed live on stage. Truly a video worth viewing.

You got the name right. This was the very first video MTV ever showed in '81...back when they played videos.

And, no. TV was a thing back in the 1940's/early 50's. This is about how radio was being quickly replaced by videos. It was a new thing. Bohemian Rhapsody was a marketing thing for a very complicated song. People like David Bowie, The Beatles, and punk bands were throwing out videos to help promote their music. Disco also did it. We saw peoples' face on Ed Sullivan and Johnny Carson. Back in this time, MTV also showed early stage performances from American Bandstand and English and German shows. But record companies were learning that they could basically make "commercials" for their singles. It was all marketing and this is how it started. You can actually find the first twelve hours of MTV on YouTube, and I recommend it. It changed the world.

Pretty ironic a song that is iconic for launching MTV is singing about video killing the radio stars and now MTV is a shell of itself from what it started as back in the early 80s. Your dancing around in your chair is fun in itself to watch...:)

One of my fave 80s songs! Now I know technically it came out in 79, however, it came out in the latter months of 79 & was still in the charts in 80
Also it gotta ton of air & video play in 80s. Plus definitely has that 80s sound. So I stand by my statement 😎 SO CATCHY! 💚
