Iqaluit is the capital city of Canada's Nunavut Territory. It is located on the huge island of Baffin in Frobisher Bay. The island is known for its ice cap mountains and tundra villages. The Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park, near the city, is home to caribou and Arctic foxes. The Qaummaarviit Territorial Park, on a small island near the town, is home to the ruins of the ancient Thule people.

In 1999, Iqaluit became the capital of Nunavut after the Northwest Territories was split into two separate territories. Prior to this event, Iqaluit was a small town, lesser known outside Canada's Arctic Circle or Canada, with very limited population and economic growth.

This is because, like the rest of Nunavut, there are no roads or railroads, only boat connections to other parts of Canada, so the city is isolated and heavily reliant on expensive imports. The city has a polar climate influenced by the cold deep waters of the Labrador Current, just off Baffin Island. Despite being far south of the Arctic Circle, the city of Iqaluit gets cold.

Iqaluit is the least populated of the Canadian capital. The inhabitants of Iqaluit are called Iqalummiut.
