Use a bar model to write and solve equations

In this lesson you will learn to write and solve equations by using a bar model.

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS

STANDARDS

VA.EI.A.4.e practical problems involving equations and systems of equations.

VA.PFA.5.19.b write an equation to represent a given mathematical relationship, using a variable;

VA.PFA.6.13 The student will solve one-step linear equations in one variable, including practical problems that require the solution of a one-step linear equation in one variable.

VA.PFA.8.16.e make connections between and among representations of a linear function using verbal descriptions, tables, equations, and graphs.

VA.PFA.8.17 The student will solve multistep linear equations in one variable with the variable on one or both sides of the equation, including practical problems that require the solution of a multistep linear equation in one variable.

VA.PFA.7.12 The student will solve two-step linear equations in one variable, including practical problems that require the solution of a two-step linear equation in one variable.

VA.PFA.7.11 The student will evaluate algebraic expressions for given replacement values of the variables.

VA.CE.7.3 The student will solve single-step and multistep practical problems, using proportional reasoning.

CCSS.7.EE.B.4.a Solve word problems leading to equations of the form 𝘱𝘹 + 𝘲 = 𝘳 and 𝘱(𝘹 + 𝘲) = 𝘳, where 𝘱, 𝘲, and 𝘳 are specific rational numbers. Solve equations of these forms fluently. Compare an algebraic solution to an arithmetic solution, identifying the sequence of the operations used in each approach. For example, the perimeter of a rectangle is 54 cm. Its length is 6 cm. What is its width?

IN.8.AF.1 Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients fluently, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms. Represent real-world problems using linear equations and inequalities in one variable and solve such problems.

IN.7.AF.2 Solve equations of the form px + q = r and p(x + q) = r fluently, where p, q, and r are specific rational numbers. Represent real-world problems using equations of these forms and solve such problems.

TEKS.4.5.D solve problems related to perimeter and area of rectangles where dimensions are whole numbers.

TEKS.4.5.A represent multi-step problems involving the four operations with whole numbers using strip diagrams and equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity;

TEKS.3.5.A represent one- and two-step problems involving addition and subtraction of whole numbers to 1,000 using pictorial models, number lines, and equations;

TEKS.8.5.I write an equation in the form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 to model a linear relationship between two quantities using verbal, numerical, tabular, and graphical representations.

TEKS.7.11.B determine if the given value(s) make(s) one-variable, two-step equations and inequalities true; and

TEKS.7.11.A model and solve one-variable, two-step equations and inequalities;

TEKS.7.10.B represent solutions for one-variable, two-step equations and inequalities on number lines; and

TEKS.7.10.A write one-variable, two-step equations and inequalities to represent constraints or conditions within problems;

TEKS.7.3.B apply and extend previous understandings of operations to solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational numbers.

TEKS.A1.5.A solve linear equations in one variable, including those for which the application of the distributive property is necessary and for which variables are included on both sides;

TEKS.5.4.B represent and solve multi-step problems involving the four operations with whole numbers using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity;

Thank you for this video, I know it's stupid, but I was worried about how to explain a bar model for one of the classes I will teach. I have never taught a whole class yet (I am on placement, so I am still a university student), so I was worried how I will explain bar model. I hope I can stand in front of the class and speak without stuttering and getting too nervous!😭
