First, I recommend everyone to watch "The Drift Bible" (If you don't know what I'm talking about, please educate yourself.)
You should get to know who Keiichi Tsuchiya, Manabu Orido, and Taniguchi Nobuteru are.
Next, watch all of Initial D. A lot of topical insights made to be entertaining.
Then, run down the parts of an actual car and understand what they do.
Now put in 10k hours drifting and experimenting with the settings.
