Gary Kurtz thought they could make a sequel for a couple million. Which is absurd. Empire cost more than twice as much. Jedi even cost over 30 million. Every single one went over budget. Even Phantom Menace went about 20 million over.

Another thing was George couldn’t be bothered to go to the Movies grand opening feeling it would be a disaster that he went on holiday with Steven Spielberg to forget about the film he made!

Before the late 90s and the arise of the home video market (and then streaming rights) nobody could shot a sequel if the first movie wasn't a solid hit.For me Lucas didn't think it could be a flop but underestimated a lot its success so he just planned different scenarios for the sequels.

Spilnter of the minds eye is actually a pretty good novel.
Has adjustable lightsabre blade length which explained some of the controls on a lightsabre, the ending was the only week point.

George Lucas was so convinced that he messed star wars up by cutting out too many scenes and made wrong decisions to focus on story telling.

This was the first SW novel, establishing the EU (now called "legends" by Disney) & I must have read it a dozen times. ADF was also the ghostwriter for the movie novelization with writing credit going to GL.

Ironically, ADF is often mistaken for ghostwriting the novelization for "Star Trek: TMP" too, but that's not true. It was written 100% by Gene Roddenberry himself from Harold Livingston's screenplay. Read it if there's any doubt- it's bizarre af.
