We should remember that testing resisted range of movement may test the muscles of the spine differently depending on how they are carried out. For example, isometrically in standing or specifically in lying, one example is multifidus. Although there is recent evidence that the muscles which were once considered important in Lumbar stability are possibly less so.

Passive range of movement can be added on as an over pressure, during active movement or sometimes PPIVMS (Passive Physiological Intervertebral Movements) are carried out in side lying to get a feel of the quality of movement at each segmental level. PPIVMS and PAIVMS (Passive Accessory Intervertebral Movements appear to be less specific than they once were considered.

Remember we obtain a significant portion of the information we need to support our subjective hypothesis from the two initial stages of Observation and function and active range of movement.
Often strength and passive range tests can be combined with the other sections, such as Active range of movement or during the Special tests such as neurology tests.
Neurology tests may be crucially important in identifying and preventing major problems, so be sure to carry them out properly if indicated.
