Stonehenge Rebuild 1958

'Happy Trails' from Dee - According to this video the ancient Stonehenge structure has been worked on over the years using modern equipment and materials. One could surmise it is no longer original.

My father was a crane driver for pickfords and worked at the site during the reassembly. I've got an album of photos which I took on a recent visit. All the guides at the Stonehenge center denied that the demolition and reconstruction had ever taken place. When I showed them the photos they claimed that they were fakes ! It was only when other visitors found old news reel footage on the internet on their phones, that they finally admitted it.
Lastly whenever I put this information on the official website comments page, it is taken down within minutes.

I visited it several times as a child in the 1960s. In those days one parked the car at the roadside, paid a shilling or so and even enjoyed a picnic amongst the stones. As I regarded the place with childish awe I couldn’t have imagined that what I was wandering around, was in effect only as old as me.

Thank You. It seems that Stonehenge is promoted as something equal to the pyramids. Glad to get a different perspective.

Narrator says we'll never know the true original position of the stones, yet in high summer heat the ground parches to reveal their positions 🙄. It's a shame the first 1901 "restoration" didn't follow modern conservation practice, but there are drawings and even paintings from before this showing the site in it's original disrepair with the fallen lintels and leaning columns. Stones were moved away to lay concrete foundations to prevent future subsidence of the site. This is such a weak conspiracy theory and the mistakes of the previous restorations are documented, just not advertised. The most scandalous part of Stonehenge' history is that the farmer that last privately owned the land bequeathed the site to the British public with strict instruction that people not be charged more than a shilling to visit, but English heritage got their greedy thieving claws on it and charge about £14. A shilling is 5 pence in today's decimal currency.

I had thought all along that the currently standing Stonehenge was simply discovered standing as it is today. Reconstructed? But at least, this video shows heavy-lifting equipment was necessary to do it. Begs the question, how did they make Stonehenge stand then?

I am amazed at this ... I did visit the site in 1978 ... it is amazing ... did know a lot about the place but not the rebuilding!!

Sure, we cannot go back in time to see how the monument was originally built, but the reconstruction in the 50's is not invalid for all that. I was lucky to be able to wander into and around the monument in the 1970's, before it was shut away from direct contact by the public. It was impressive then, and still is. Thanks for this vid.

Same as Newgrange which needed jcbs to bucket the mound away. The Sphinx looks pretty odd too.

It just blows my mind that somebody would ever tamper with an ancient sight, not to mention totally rebuild it, a very sad day, it is no longer an ancient sight.
