I’m not slick enough for this but last year a segment of my students HATED me which was a first in 17 years! Like, to the point of making it known around the school. I didn’t let it affect me, it was a sign of the effects of the policies in place. Extremely poor handling of behavior issues even when I moved it up the chain, ridiculous policies on cell phones (green zones where they could use them, so they just openly used them everywhere AND we weren’t allowed to confiscate them). Totally tuned out and disrespectful. The law changing to ban phones in schools has made ALL the difference so far (hope that holds!). Kids are paying attention, absorbing the content, engaging with each other face to face, and I even see them doing more school work due lunch! 😮 and they’re nicer and more respectful! It’s like a spell has been broken. And I even had new kids say that they “heard I was really mean and terrible but they don’t know what those kids were talking about because I seem cool” 😂 It’s all about engagement and I can’t engage if I can’t manage the class.
