Ella's Emergency Makeover (depressing old flash game, TW: body shaming)

Anyone remember playing this in, like, the early 2010s? I thought it was just a nightmare I had as a little boy until I found this recording on my dad's old computer lol.

I can definitely tell that this was inspired by the Lacey games.

However, instead of having to deal with a creepy stalker, we instead have to deal with our self image, and how it affects our mental health.

And so begins the trend of flash horror based on girls games

Honestly, this feels more like an interactive PSA of the dangers of Body Shaming in a way.

This isn't even scary, just sad.

The "You shouldn't frown, Ella. That causes wrinkles" part nails something I've been told as a tween/teen. I've been told "don't eat that or else you'll get fat" or "don't say words like that, it's very unladylike."

Sentences like that are probably a part of every girl's childhood. It's like society tells us what to do in order to be "prettier" or more "desirable." It's wrong on so many levels. That part of the video just opened a part of my childhood that I thought I buried behind.

I agree with the comments below this video, doesn't feel and look scary at all. Just sad.

However, I disagree with them saying the game's statements about her aren't realistic. I found it very accurate and close to many people's mindset and especially mean girls in schools, they either say those awful stuff in their minds, or gossip behind her back, or literally admit it to her.

Yes it's a bit corny wording, but I don't think students in rl are careful enough to choose synonyms for each word in a conversation.

But I'm gonna be honest on this one. When the game removed her braces and didn't seem to care and double down on the mean comments despite Ella is clearly in pain and distress. Is really disturbing and real to me. Those people who pretend they care about you, they actually don't, they don't care about your concerns, they only care if you looked pretty enough to them, and the only reason they helped you, because they got bothered by your looks, almost like it's a personal attack to their lifestyle, "how is that person is comfortable being that ugly?!", to the extent they felt like they should step in and "save" you. And about the health risks and side effects? Just hide it, as long as you are decent enough for society's standards, then you're all good!! In the outside at least!! Although your body isn't gonna function as well as it used to be.

I found this video very reletable. My older sister got bullied by her family and school that drived her to take pills that supposedly helps her to gain weight. In the end she got diagnosed with Coeliac.. Skinnier more than ever, doesn't eat much anymore, anxiety and depression.

Your video and the message is simple, but it was powerful enough to remember all the life trauma that's connected to it.

While the horror is a bit forced and could have been executed better, I love the premise of this! It really shows how cruel the logic of these dress up revenge games actually is. Someone rejects you because you're ugly? Well, you are ugly, so become beautiful so you can feel some form of self worth and value as a person! The 'good ending' doesn't involve finding someone who loves you as you are, but rather changing yourself to become conventionally attractive. It'd be really cool if you made a remake, maybe with a bit more subtlety

I know everyone is comparing it to Lacey's games, but I think this holds up on it's own. It captures the quick decline of your mental state when you first enter the grasp of an eating disorder.

i'm really happy with the ending. obviously it's super sad that the player/narrator put Ella through such hell and gave her such bad body dysmorphia that she didn't want to go anywhere—that's not the part i'm happy about. i'm happy that it didn't end with any jumpscares or disturbing imagery or anything shocking. it was just the tragedy of how unhealthy and toxic beauty standards can mentally destroy a person.

I believe this video is a commentary of what those makeover Girls Go Games games can do to kids. They can make them have unhealthy beauty standards, hate themselves for who they are, and try to get them to do dangerous things like taking off braces or waxing by themselves. Ella is a character who in most makeover games is a person you have to “fix” because they’re “ugly”, which can be *terrible* to teach young kids. If you are struggling with body image issues, just know that you’re not alone and that you’re beautiful in your own unique way, and that’s something no one should try to change ❤️

I like how this game doesn't actually have a horror twist. It instead has an extremely depressing moral to it's audience.

What's even sadder is how the narrator is genuinely trying to help Ella, but it doesn't take into account Ella's mental health. In the end, all it did was destroy her self-confidence.

i actually believed this was an actual game for a sec
lacey may be better but this one is more grounded
something like that could actually be made in flash

As someone who played tons of those makeover/dress-up games as a youngin, this was honestly such an interesting watch. I honestly appreciate that this went the more despressing route over trying too hard to be scary; it comes off kind of like a commentary on how these types of games negatively impacted a lot of young girls, myself included, and helps it to stand out from the other fake flash games floating around. Keep up the great work~

This is kinda depressing... The way that the game threatening Ella was just awful. I thought this game was about making Ella beautiful but I realized that the game wasn't making her beautiful, They made her as a monster... I just wanna give her a comfort hug :(

This gives me flashbacks to being a chubby kid in the early 2010s, and playing a game where you had to give princess Fiona liposuction. Messed with my head, man

Please, PLEASE do not read these comments.

Half a dozen no-lifers who missed the point of the game bombed the section with their own insecurities, just like or dislike and go watch something else.
