Situated in Italy’s north-east corner is the ‘floating city’ of Venice, one of the country’s most beautiful destinations. Its elegant architecture and gondola-flecked canals have drawn in visitors for years. Don’t miss the incredible mosaics inside the Basilica di San Marco or the frescoes and artworks of the Doge’s Palace, and save a morning to wander around the stalls of the historic Rialto Market.
As well as the main sights, we’d highly recommend getting off the beaten track a little. The quieter neighbourhoods of Cannaregio and Dorsoduro are well worth exploring, as are the smaller islands out in the lagoon, like Burano and Torcello.
