In this episode of the CyberGizmo we explore another canidate for a CentOS 8 replacement, OpenSUSE Leap 15.2 Server. SUSE of course is considered one of the early adopters of Linux and has been a cornerstone of Linux for almost 3 decades. OpenSUSE is the branch of their commercial Linux which remains free and open source for people to use. I am reviewing this distribution as a potential replace for CentOS Linux and I was quite surprised at its ease of install and setup using the utilities supplied by the OpenSUSE development team.

Really interesting video! Just got an OpenSuse VM setup on my ESXi host tonight to mess around with. I look forward to the comparison video.

Hello DJ, I was just looking for something to replace my CentOS8 Environment (now that I've become a RHCSA8) and this video is just perfect for me! Thanks for the content

Thanks DJ, JIT, I was looking at OpenSuse as well as a CentOS replacement. What interests me are privacy requirements regarding GDPR.

DJ. would you consider doing a review of OpenSuse 15.4 soon? It's been a while and a lot has changed. Cheers!

I remember that this distribution used to be a lot more on the radar. Yast2 reminded me of the Windows XP installation screen with its design 😁 it is interesting to learn the variety of distributions, thank you for that👍🏻
P.S. HAL 9000 hanging on your back is awesome!

How to solve problem segmentation fault (core dumped)?

I use this for my (only) home server. My biggest gripes are 1) a lot of the online documentation is really outdated, and 2) a lot of the interesting (to me) projects for IOT type stuff seem to be catered towards Ubuntu and maybe Fedora (you are on your own with OpenSUSE).

I like Zypper.

YaST CLI required some tweaking when connecting remotely from Windows to display correctly (something about ncurses and character encoding).

I would like to know, what hardware you are using to install ProxMox and all those virtual Desktops/Servers, I am hoping to do the same.

Do you have any plans to look at Bedrock Linux

Thanks DJ, as usual a good presentation :)

Regarding GlusterFS, and indeed most 'recent' incarnation of software packages, for OpenSuSE one usually goes and looks at what is available on software.opensuse.org. For GlusterFS specifically you'll find it in the community packages for 15.2 (in fact GlusterFS's own website will point you there, when you go to download the SuSE version). As usual, just like Ubuntu/Mint PPAs, caveats apply when using those 'unofficial' packages, but well if you need it, you need it right? Anyway the highest version available there, is 8.3.

As for Docker, the most recent I could find on there was 19.03.14_ce.

Hi DJ
Once again, you are about a few weeks early for the 15.3 release. The 15.3 release is being beta'd and SUSE is aware that 15.2 is due for updates.
I actually like SUSE as much as I like Fedora. Ergo, I have both installed and flip between them.
I have been wanting to have openzfs on Suse, but then, , ,
Seeing that Christmas is two days away, may I wish you and your family and the other viewers a very safe, Christmas and holiday.

As an aside, the corona virus does not like vitamin D and less density blood. The virus kills by creating blood clots.

So, one vitamin D tablet and baby aspirin tablet daily is a protection from sustaining the ultimate effect if a user contracts the virus.
