Stock Market Volatility - What you need to know In 2024

Stock market volatility is not predictable and is part and parcel of the contract (literal) you sign when you become an investor in the markets. In reality, over the years since the inception of the stock market we have gone through several bear (down) and bull (up) markets with the overall average return of 10 - 15%+.

The key to understanding stock market volatility is that it will continue and you can expect up to a 15% increase or decrease in your stock portfolio for a given year. Once in every 5 years or so you can expect a "black swan" (not normal, like 2020 with the COVID pandemic) event that may reduce your holdings up to 30%.

But if you keep cool and not swayed by emotions and stay the course, you can expect very good returns from the stock market over the long haul.

For example, if you invested $1,000 in 1986 in Microsoft that would be worth $3.23 million today. And, because Microsoft has paid a dividend since 2003, you'd have also received $341,513 in dividends.
