Life after HIPEC

Показать описание
Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a process in which heated chemotherapy is pumped directly into the abdomen after surgery. The total recovery time is 3-4 months. The hospital stay is 7 to 10 days.

Early walking is encouraged to prevent complications after the procedure.

Not only rest is important, remaining as active as possible is also important.

Most of the patients can go back to work in about a month, as long as the job doesn't include heavy lifting.

I had HIPEC 5 1/2 years ago and I will tell you everyone is different. I had a 12.5 hour surgery with 21 days in the hospital. Recovery was grueling, as I had many organs removed. My cancer was stage 4 appendix cancer. I couldn't eat for 3 months and was saved by prescribed medical marijuana. It literally took me 2 years to recover, however I have been cancer free since. Was it worth it? I would say yes. Not all patients recover like this article shows.

I recently had HIPEC for a reoccurrence of OC. Wish had it with my first cytoreductive surgery then I may have avoided the need for a second surgery and further tumour removal. 10 days in hospital. Mobilzed the day after surgery every morning and afternoon. Ate a soft diet did not need a tube. Never lost weight nor my appetite!Only issue was constipation. The day after I got home I began a regular pattern. Three months later fatigue gone. I walk a minimum of 30 mins each day and eat a sensible diet. Took an overseas trip week 8. No side effects unlike with systemic chemo. I was profiled for the surgery to be accepted… fit and healthy, no comorbidites, no heart disease and cancer limited to pelvis and able to be removed. Would do it again in a heart beat. I have a PCI of 5 and am aiming to kick this unwanted visitor into touch… remember every experience is unique to the individual. Do what feels right for you

My cousin has been treated with HIPEC for an ovarian cancer. Had a 14-hour surgery, with colostomy applied and was dismissed with doctors saying she only has two months left.
Her recovery has been quite difficult especially for the colostomy causing troubles, for which she's been admitted twice in a hospice. The terrifying experience of being 30 and finding yourself in such a place was compensated by the fantastic work they did there. They literally brought her back to normality and she made a miraculous recovery. She even had her colostomy removed.
Seven years later from initial surgery, she is alive and well.

Thank you science.
