Having once owned a Catalpa tree they come in two varieties, Southern Catalpa and Northern Catalpa. The southern is much like a wild bush. The Northern Catalpa is a magnificent tree which can grow to seven stories high.
The northern variety blooms every year in late June. It will cover itself with white blossoms which looks like pop-corn from a distance. Later on in the summer it will be covered in long seed pods which resemble beans. The leaves are quite large and reminiscent of tobacco leaves. The Catalpa tree is native to the Ohio Valley in the United States.
It prefers bottom land along the shores of rivers. Besides the seeds the tree will put out runners to propagate itself. Easy to clean up after in the autumn. Beneath the tree it provides a beautiful lawn with neither weeds or crab grass. The wood is prized by wood workers as it will shrink when dry and expand when steam is applied to it,

We have at least 15-20 of these trees around our house. One that is at least 60+ years old(it's huge), but it has a huge honey bee hive in it's trunk right now.
They also have these white/black stripes or Visa-versa caterpillars between july-sept, that's great for fishing. They r called "Catawba worms".
The white blooms when they fall off into our yard it looks beautiful.

It's best to prune open grown trees for one strong apical dominant central leader first 15 years which wild catalpa is known for structurally.

My Cattailpa tree is at least 110 year old. Planted it when I was 2 months old. Still living here at the old Homestead and looking at the old tree. It gets worms each year from that danged old moth and been using them to catch fish in the pond I dug when I was nine months old. Everybody gets excited about this brand of tree, but I don"t know what all the fuss is over. The tree is uglier than sin and rough as a cob. Don't quite know why I've kept it other than I raised it my self. OK so how about the darned old oak tree, that's a nice tree to have on your property. How come we don't talk about the Oak Trees that are out there. And the Maple and Gum and Hickory and Ash Trees. Why are we talkindg about an ugly old Cattailpa Tree.... good for nothing old tree.
