You're only shocked at JJ McCarthy's progress if you never really watched him play. He has incredible arm strength, routinely made incredible throws, was an almost impeccable winner and fantastic leader. All while not getting the attempts he should have.
His downsides are his deep ball accuracy being inconsistent and his delivery on clean pocket throws. He throws better off platform or on the run. Both of those things really are hard to tell anything substantive about because of his low attempts at Michigan. The flashes of raw talent though are completely undeniable and he had some of the best throws of any QB had in college over his tenure as starter.

FYI, JJ has been running the 2nd team Offense, but he’s doing it against the 1st team Defense

As a Minnesota Vikings fan… I hope we do not play JJ McCarthy at all this season. Let him sit behind Sam, learn the offense and fix his mechanics. I don’t care if we lose every single game, let him sit until he’s completely ready.

Edit: after watching his preseason debut… I semi-retract my statement. He seems to be advancing in his development in the offense quicker than I excepted. I still think Darnold should start week 1 but I think JJ will be ready by the end of the season if needed. Still think you shield the young QB and continue to mold him while he waits. Don’t throw him to the fire until he’s ready.

Edit 2: fuck…

Anyone that actually watched JJ play in college understands his ability.
He reads defenses makes timely passes don’t turn the ball over is athletic and has the mentality of the greats ..

If he was with a offensive coach in college he would’ve had Heisman numbers
This dude sacrificed for his team and to win ..
Highschool championships
Big ten Championships
College football national championship ..
He will be successful in the nfl
As a lions fan he scares me because he has a coach and talent that he can win with..
Not saying he wins Super Bowls but he will definitely be a franchise Qb

QB training camp hype has been ridiculous for every team tbh

Cherry on top McCarthy is 21 years old. Compare McCarthy's season last season to any college QB ever of the same age. Factor in his attempts being low and what you will find is his trajectory will lead you to believe he is a number one overall pick calibur player at the average age of a QB entering the draft.

He's also been running some plays with the first team and also 2nd team offense vs 1st team defense. The clip in the video where he throws the fade away TD, if you look closely that was Harrison Smith in coverage with the WR.

As a Michigan fan, I think JJ is going to eventually be a good NFL quarterback. I think he'll have a better career than some of the QBs drafted in front of him. I think he's like a Brock Purdy type with a better arm, more athletic, and a higher ceiling.

You forgot to mention Flos defense with Dallas T and Ivan Agent 0 Pace JR!
Man, I wished our GM didn’t whiff with Cine and went with Hamilton, the Defense would be a threat at all levels and young as hell!

JJ made a lot of full-field reads in college. He'll be fine in the NFL. He looked very comfortable and collected in his debut. Throws a beautiful ball. He's got one of the best head coaches for a QB.

If you take the other top QB's drafted and look at their stats and compare them to JJ you will see he had significantly less attempts, a better completion percentage, a better yards per attempt and a comparable touchdown percentage.
If Michigan let him throw the ball or his attempts were around 500 like these other guys instead of 322, he would have been in the running for number one overall pick and hes the youngest of the bunch. Beyond that his WR's werent exactly world beaters at Michigan. Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson were nice players but they arent on the level of elite WR's or even among the best of the big ten.

What people seem to forget is JJ played for an accomplished NFL HC in an NFL offense with NFL terminology. People don’t realize how that alone makes the college to pro transition easier. JJ has been running an NFL style offense the past two years already.

C'mon Mike, there was no QB left at 13 that The Raiders wanted and best thing to do was to get the best player available with Bowers. But you are right Minshew is a little underrated.

Great video Mike, as always.
As a born Vikings fan I have to say I’m excited to see how all of this will play out at the qb spot.
I wasn’t this hyped when we drafted Ponder or Bridgewater that’s for sure.
Can’t wait for the season to start!

Been watching JJ for years now (Michigan fan). The hype is real, the guy can ball. He has crazy vision, talent, work ethic, and he’s a good teammate. HOWEVER, dude really should sit for an about a year to get used to NFL speed or else he’s going to throw an insane amount of picks 😅. Given time for development I really think he can be a great NFL QB.

I was hyped when Vikings drafted McCarthy and still am! Also... I was never in panic mode when the Vikings lost Kirk... I was more relieved even when they signed Sam Darnold... Did we forget what KOC got out of Josh Dobbs?

It's a great situation for player and team. Apparently JJ looks significantly better since mini-camp when the coaches were primarily working on his footwork. His work ethic and drive to be better is impressive. He's going to be a starting QB in this league, probably as some point this season, it's just a matter of where that ceiling is.
