"Chords of inquiry" is such a fantastic phrase

People that think "You can't do that" think of music theory as a rule book.
It isn't.
It's a toolbox.

She played jazz with legends and folk with legends.. rock with legends.. she is a legend

Her melody makes the chords work. She can play whatever chord she wants if she’s gonna write songs like that.

I love her so much, and this song especially. And she was self-taught. Come on! 50 different alternate tunings. Absolute genius.

You just can’t argue with her reasoning…Joni Mitchell knows what she’s talking about.

I love Eddie, Vai, Atkins, Morse et al but Joni Mitchell has an understanding of the emotion implied with her chords that rivals any Guitarist anywhere. Genius.❤

Joni Mitchell’s music is an absolute gift, she’s had such a deserved outsized influence on modern indie, folk, pop and rock and especially female singer-songwriters, but also just in general.

Joni = Genius. No songwriter comes close

If there’s ANYONE who “knew what they were doing, ” it was Joni. If there aren’t already, there should be courses of study in colleges and universities about her music. Hey, Berklee- if you’re listening… anyone who can tame the savage beast known by the name Jaco is a legend in my book. “Blue, ” “Court and Spark, ” and “Hejira” are 3 of the greatest albums ever. Not to mention what she’s done in the last decade…

I’ve been thinking about how you should breakdown some of Joni’s songs, a real exercise in understanding how chord structures work within a song and then knowing how to bend the “rules”. But the interesting part came at the end… right on Joni!

I have been in love with Joni since I first heard "Chelsea Morning" over the FM radio sometime in the early 70s.

I had to close my eyes and look away in sudden admiration during that explanation. Bless Joni Mitchell.

I agree. Songs need the chords to convey the feeling even if it doesn't seem logical at times.

Those changes killed me from the first time I heard this song. I remember the exact moment. It was stunning.

What a beautiful metaphor she made.
I kinda relate to that, i still have a lot of questions about everything.

It's one of those things that artists nowadays don't care about, and just make quantity instead of quality.
Even if you don't like this kind of music, you can't deny that a lot of work and feelings were put into it.
