China's first undersea CO2 storage well begins drilling

The China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) started the drilling of the country's first undersea carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) well. The well drilling was operated at the Enping 15-1 Platform, China's domestically built offshore oil production platform and the largest one of its kind in Asia, located in the Pearl River Mouth Basin of the South China Sea. The well can inject the captured carbon dioxide into the land or deep-sea saltwater layer at a depth of 800 to 3,500 meters. The technology is an internationally-recognized measure to promote carbon emission reduction. It is estimated that 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide can be stored annually at the operation peak and has a total capacity of more than 1.5 million tonnes, according to the CNOOC.
