Seiko Mods - A waste of money?

Modding Seiko has a huge scene! I've never done more than dip my toes in the process. What do you guys think? Totally worth it, or would you be better off buying a higher priced stock watch in the first place? Its an interesting topic

The enjoyment of modding does not come from making something sensible, but making something yourself.

People over build houses and cars all the time. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Thanks for a good review today, always good!!

I purchased a moded SKX007 from Island Watch. Around $450 total. DD Saphire, Lumed Bezel Insert, Strapcode Braclet plus got all original parts back. To me it was worth every penny and I intend to keep it my collection forever.

SKX: $200.
1 of a kind custom modded SKX: PRICELESS....

I bought a Heimdallr SKX with a sapphire crystal, milled clasp, ceramic bezel, and NH36 movement for $140. I spent another $50 on a dial and hands that I liked better and ended up with a better watch than an SKX for cheaper than an SKX. I think going that route is sensible, but some of the prices are insane.

I did mods to my SKX to decidedly look 100% stock, but just higher grade. So lumed ceramic insert in the fully calibrated black/white font just like stock, Angus Jubilee, and a tighter-knurled stainless bezel. So in total, including the watch itself, I have $395 total into my dream SKX. And I make it a point to never do anything that can't be undone.

I fell in love with Seiko watches, but being a mechanic and introducing a Hardlex crystal into my career choice just did not mix! Natural wear and tear on the bezel is fine, hell, it gives the watch character, but a scratched up crystal, Thank the lord for Crystal Times and their sapphire crystals! Just do what you like and have fun doing it! I once hacked an old Luminox watch with an Invicta Pro Diver, put the Luminox blue dial on the Invicta! Now it's something I like, and it's in my rotation! Fine discussion and video, props to Random Rob on the mod! (say that fast 10 times)

How much do I have into this? Yikes what was I thinking? Guess I will go build a few more. Lol
I love building them and creating them.

Watch modding is great fun the opportunity to be creative in something that was only possible to craftsmen and manufacturers a few years ago. The transparency of the modding community in sharing knowledge through providing so many tutorials is brilliant.

Great Video. Love Rob's work. I think personally a 1000 dollar SKX is a little over the top for my budget and as mentioned I lean towards buying a little higher end Seiko. Though I do appreciate the passion some people put into there Hobbie and or craft. Rob is a perfect example. Great topic.

SKX is a winner. Doesn't need modding imo. It has awesome proportions.

I love modding, but stay under $250.
I love the light bulb moment, when a concept pops into mind, .
I enjoy the search, trying to remember where I saw the various parts.
Great topic, Bruce

If resale is a thing, then run away. It's the love of personalization that drives the modder. For me, it's 100% worth it. But I'm the guy that has 25k in a car that I couldn't sell for 5k! But I love that car!

my brother gave me a Noah Fuller custom built Tsunami (Turtle if Seiko). 1 of 100. 6R15 movement, stock hands, custom dial with Lumibrite applied markers, custom case (same size, recessed 4 o'clock screw down crown), Seiko double coin edge 120 click unidirectional bezel with ceramic insert, milled oyster bracelet. LOVE it.

From a Plato-nic point of view, we are all driven by the idea of a perfect SKX, the highest good and beauty, that keeps us searching and modding the earthly ones... 🤔

A one off personalised watch for $800 yes, your own specs yes if your gonna keep it then YES it's a true your own designed seiko that's better than what the company makes. And best of all no one will have the same watch 👍👍

Well spotted Bruce! Modding few parts makes sense but this is too much...
With total price I will rather buy a 62 Mas reedition, maybe the green sea one!
Said that, Rob has done a terrific job, bravo!

Its the same with building AR-15s. Way cheaper to buy one off the shelf vs building your own rifle.
You do it because you want to make something "Yours", and the love for the process.

I have a modded skx that I ended up paying a lot more than I should of. I love it and don’t regret it. It’s your own. That being said the resale on modded watches is really not there. It’s hard to sell an originally $200 watch for $800 even with all of the parts added. Modding is for people that LOVE the model. The sbdc series and others around that price give you more watch and resale. If you want a watch that’s one of a kind and really like the skx, I say go for it, but be prepared to pay for it.

I like that I can have a watch exactly how I want it and it's one of a kind. Best part is: I can change it later if I want to. Yeah, I've bought a lot of parts and some I no longer use. You also need to get some special tools, but that's part of the enjoyment. Modding isn't for everyone, so you just do what you want and can afford if it makes you happy.
