Your dad is right here! Paneer is definitely closer to tofu than cheese.. We Indians define Tofu as Paneer made out of soy milk instead of cow/buffalo milk! Its basically the same recipe, with different milk.. Glad to see your parents enjoy the dishes.

I think you guys should try indo-chinese food. Indian people love Chinese food as well but it's a fusion with indian spices to suit the Indian palette.

I mean tofu and paneer can taste very similar when cooked a certain way or in certain dishes. They also can be interchanged in a lot of recipies.

Just this afternoon I came across 2 asian ladies buying hing or asafoetida the spice umami of Indian food I commended them on their gastronomic adventure and gave the advice of using just a little the first time around.
